What data Expo Contacts collects
Your privacy policy must disclose each of the following data types when you use Expo Contacts.
When does Expo Contacts trigger privacy obligations?
Installation and Data Access Rights
Adding Expo Contacts to your Expo application immediately creates a pathway to device contact data—including names, phone numbers, email addresses, and contact photos. The moment your app requests permission to access the Contacts API, the data flows start.
Jurisdiction-Specific Triggers
GDPR (EU/EEA users): If your app is accessible to EU residents or you're processing contacts of EU users, Expo Contacts triggers GDPR Article 6 (lawful basis), Article 13/14 (transparency), and Article 32 (security) obligations immediately. Contact data is personal data and qualifies as sensitive under GDPR Article 9. You must have explicit consent before Expo Contacts accesses device contacts—not just app install consent.
