What data Expo Image Picker collects
Your privacy policy must disclose each of the following data types when you use Expo Image Picker.
When does Expo Image Picker trigger privacy obligations?
Expo Image Picker triggers privacy obligations the moment it's integrated into your application and users can access the photo/video selection interface. The library itself does not transmit data to Expo servers by default—selected media files remain on the user's device—but you must still account for the data flow:
Immediate obligations:
1. Permission disclosure (all jurisdictions). iOS and Android require explicit user consent before Expo Image Picker accesses the device photo library. You must inform users *before* the permission prompt appears that you're requesting photo library access and why. Under GDPR Article 13, if you're an EU controller, you must provide a privacy notice at collection time explaining the purpose of photo access.
2. GDPR triggers (EU users). If your application has EU users and they select and upload photos, you are processing personal data (image metadata, timestamps, file paths). This triggers GDPR Article 6 (lawful basis requirement) and Article 13/14 (privacy notice obligations). GDPR applies if the user or your company has EU presence.
3. CCPA triggers (California users).
