What data StatCounter collects
Your privacy policy must disclose each of the following data types when you use StatCounter.
When does StatCounter trigger privacy obligations?
Installation triggers immediate data collection
The moment StatCounter's tracking code is added to your site or app, it begins collecting IP addresses, page views, browser information, and referral sources from every visitor. This data flow—regardless of visitor consent status—triggers compliance obligations in most jurisdictions.
GDPR applicability
If your site attracts any EU residents, GDPR applies. StatCounter's collection of IP addresses constitutes personal data under GDPR Article 4(1). You become a data controller and StatCounter becomes a processor. GDPR Article 6 requires a lawful basis (typically consent under Article 7) before collection starts. GDPR Article 13/14 requires you to provide privacy notices at the point of collection.
